Massive Multiplayer Mod, Live Production, Community Management

Overview

We started with ten people who had the vision to create a gamemode that allows you to live an alternate life by starting your own business, becoming a Mafia boss and ruling over an underworld, or assisting citizens through the Police or Medical Force. I handled communication between the Development, Gamedesign, and Player Support Teams and established short-term and longterm Goals. Because the people that work on the Project are not paid and do it as a hobby, this project taught me a lot about leading without authority. During my time at LuckyV, we largely used the Waterfall Methodology, which I learned was unsuitable for a team that works on projects in their spare time.

What is GTA:RP?

A multiplayer mod based on GTA V, essentially using it as an engine, allowing up to 2,500 players to join simultaneously and take on unique roles.

Roles and Responsibilites

As Founder & Game Director :

  • Initiated the project and defined the initial scope and pre-production plan.

  • Assembled the team and conducted hiring interviews for all departments.

  • Launched a marketing campaign and managed community engagement.

  • Led multiple departments for the first six weeks before appointing department leaders.

  • Hosted regular community meetings with over 300 attendees.

  • Facilitated weekly team meetings and leadership standups.

  • Planned update releases and prepared campaigns in advance.

  • Addressed legal matters and onboarded a legal team.

Challenges

Leading a big indie Team without Profits / Salarys

Senior Developers spending multiple hours daily after their fulltime job unpaid means theres little room for conflict or bad decisions. By learning how to lead without Authority I managed to always keep a good working climate and acted as a mediator when conflicts arised.
